There are several steps you may take as a parent

Positive affirmations, for example, play an important role in shaping self-esteem. Instead of saying, “Don’t be mean,” to a child, it is often more useful to say, “Be nice.” Another example might include a child who shares his or her toys with a select group of kids, excluding others. A teacher can intervene by saying, “It was very nice of you to share your toys with X and Y. Now, Z wants you to be nice, too.” This might be a more ideal way of telling the child not to exclude others, because it isn’t a direct attack on the child.
